As a Credentialed Professional Historical Thinking Guy, I’m constantly reminded of how we can only really understand ourselves when we’ve got an understanding of our past. Only through learning about the people who came before us do we start to get “the strangeness of now,”; that is, how unusual our present-day era is when understood in historical perspective. Like my podcast, these essays are not verbatim bits from my larger book project, but they’re book-project-adjacent.
