Are you lost in time?
You’re lost in an unfamiliar town. What do you do? Sure, you could ask the robot lady on your phone for directions, but the only way to really keep yourself from getting lost again is to become familiar with local landmarks.
The same is true with being lost in time. You don’t really know when you are until you investigate what came before—when you become familiar with the past.2Knowing the future would help here too. If you’re good at that, please contact me because I need help filling out next year’s March Madness bracket. That’s where the legit, evidence-based, process of doing history comes in. Only through immersing yourself in yesterday can you understand today.
And when you do explore the before3Note to self: Explore The Before could be a badass slogan to put on a mug or t-shirt. like historians do, you’ll discover that now is especially strange—that you are a weirdo. It’s going to be okay though. I’m a professional historian and I’ve been trained to help you find your way. My name is Doug Sofer, and I’m a weirdo just like you.
